2009 NFL ATS Pick 'Em: Week Eleven - Brian Boesch

By: Luke Florence
Pittsburgh -9.5
Sometimes it's better to look at stats a little differently. This isn't the case for the Browns. Kansas City has 8 more TDs than the Browns offensively. BUT! The Browns do have one more TD on the ground. 2-1! The name on the door is Cleveland.

Indy -0.5
An unbeaten team on the road basically straight up against a team that couldn't score on the Browns until the second half? Black Friday is early this year....what a deal.

San Fran +6.5
The Packers won despite Jake Young's white flag last week. By the way, he's still doing it. If you are confused about the word resiliency, this situation should clear it up for you.

Jacksonville -8.5
The Jaguars are doing better than I am in ATS pick 'em. If I didn't have a bigger fan base than the Jags, I wouldn't be able to handle it.

Atlanta +6.5
This may be an impossible mission, but I'm gonna try to do something. Innovators need to have "marbles." Romo is homo was the first, but how about Eli's a Gay Guy? I think we can do it folks. All together now.

New Orleans -11.5
If you're a Browns fan and you need to hold back a smile, just think this...the Buccaneers are better than the Browns.

Cleveland +3.5
Not only is today my 20th birthday (the worst birthday out there), but I'm going to spend it watching the Browns lose 9-6 to the Lions. If I get my birthday wish, the Browns will be searching for a new coach tomorrow.

The F'd Up Pick Of The Week
Luke's been sick, so hopefully this is the perfect medicine. An F'd Up Pick of the Week with Mr. Tony Romo. Conveniently enough, there are 10 letters in the phrase "Romo is homo." So, we're gonna use that instead of numbers. In the words of Luke, Giddy Up.
Team with a heterosexual QB rolls first.
Roll R: Both teams roll an 8. Dallas doubled up with 3's and rolled a 2. 8-8 through 1.
Roll O: Washington with another 8, but Romo's crew only musters a 6. 16-14 WAS.
Roll M: Uh oh, Dallas comes back with a big-time effort. The Skins only get a 4, and Romo (who tends to like similar things...like guys) doubles up again with 5's (and-one: 2). DAL up 26-20.
Roll O: Redskins inch a bit closer with an 8-7 round victory. But the Cowboys still lead by 5, 33-28.
Roll I: I don't wanna jinx it, but we may be in for a good one here. A 10 for Washington, with a double-4 and an and-one 2. Cowboys get a 7. At ROMOI rounds, we sit at 40-38 in favor of Dallas.
Roll S: Washington pulls ahead. Jim Zorn was still booed. An 11 for the 'Skins and 8 for Dallas. 49-48 for the non-homos.
Roll H: Another close roll, but the Skins maintain the small lead. 7-6 in the round, 56-54 in the game. Seriously folks. Fasten your seatbelts.
Roll O: How about a pair of and-ones. Double 6's for Washington, and a 2 on the extra roll. Double 2's for Dallas, and a 6 on the and-one. After all that, the Skins have the lead 70-64 with two rolls to go.
Roll M: The Cowboys do exactly what they had to here...cut the lead in half. The 'Boys win the round 10-7. We head to the final roll, and Washington leads 77-74.
Roll O: WOOOOOOOOOW. What a statement by Washington. DOUBLE 6's! A 2 on the and-one. Dallas down 17. Can Romo pull the miracle.....knowing this league, did you have any confidence he would? Hell no. Just a 7. Washington wins 91-81 in a game closer than the score would indicate. The moral of the story? Don't like Tony Romo.

The pick: Washington +11.5.

Minnesota -10.5
I'm stunned Favre comes up as a misspelled word when you spell-check it? Quite frankly, I'm offended. Brett Favre is the most dynamic and interchangeable phrase in the English language.

Arizona -8.5
I like how everyone says that the Rams play hard for Spags. That's exactly like the whole "But she's got a great personality." It means they suck. Congrats.

New England -10.5
Remember when everyone was going bonkers over Rex and the Sanchize? Remember when they beat the Pats? Not For Long folks.

San Diego -2.5
Denver was dating a hot girl for awhile, and it was reaping all the benefits. Everyone loved it. It got a lot of attention. And then, the girl's ex-boyfriend swooped in and took her away. Losing to Washington was the last straw. The girl and ex-boyfriend just eloped in Vegas. Sorry, Denver.

Cincinnati -9.5
The only logical segway into props to the Ohio Bobcats. Friday at 11 AM on ESPNU, the MAC East title game...Ohio and Temple. Mike Mitchell will be watching. You should too. Go Bobcats.

Philly -2.5
This just in. That girl's ex-boyfriend from the San Diego-Denver comment was Jay Cutler. What a douche.

Tennessee +5.5
Vince Young is doing exactly what Romeo Crennel did in 2007...delaying the inevitable. He's not an NFL QB. Romeo isn't an NFL coach. I hope for Titans' fans' sake that he gets crushed the rest of the season.

I'll keep this rather simple. There's a reason Brian Boesch is currently ranked #1 in the Gus Johnson standings. And you just read it.

2009 NFL ATS Pick 'Em: Week Eleven - Matt Barnes

By: Luke Florence
Theme: White American NBA Players

MIA-CAR
This is a match-up of which team can become the Chris Quinn (or any ND B-Ball player for that matter) of their conference: Just average.

PIT-KC
Matt Cassel is to the Chiefs as Tyler Hansbrough is to the Pacers - the Great White Hope.

IND-BAL
I wonder how much money would Knicks center David Lee pay Ray Lewis to stab him just so he could no longer play for the Knicks? Hell, Ray would prolly do it for free.

SF-GB
There's potential for both teams like there is with Kevin Love. But potential is the same thing Charlie Weis had as Notre Dame's coach and Luke as a tennis player. Didn't get them anywhere.

BUF-JAX
The Jags have a Matt Bonner approach to their games. It's real ugly to watch but it gets the job done in the end.

ATL-NYG
The Giants have gone all JJ Redick on us. Started off great like JJ in college but what's happened? The Giants have lost 4 in a row and Redick is about as useful as the mop boy under the hoop. Actually, that's an insult to the mop boy.

NO-TB
They may be 1-0 in the orange creamsicle uniforms but the Bucs are gonna feel like Chris Kaman when this one's all over. Overmatched by someone much better and the ugliest thing on the playing surface.

CLE-DET
Adam "cry me a river" Morrison is less of a disappointment than both of these teams are.

WAS-DAL
The Cowboys are still playing like Steve Blake, better than what many expected. Meanwhile, the Redskins are playing like Matt Carroll. They have their moments but aren't gonna be good anytime soon.

SEA-MIN
With the way Brett Favre is playing, he isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Kind of like Brad Miller, except the fact that he is as much talent as Favre has his his left pinky finger.

AZ-STL
The Rams remind me a lot of Jason Kapono. They're only good for one thing. Rams can run it down your throat with Steven Jackson. Kapono can win a 3-point contest for whatever teams decided to sign him to the NBA minimum in the offseason.

NYJ-NE
Still waiting for Bill Belichick to just admit he pulled a BJ Mullens. Went for it all, got no results, and is now the laughing stock of everyone.

SD-DEN
After this game, Chris Simms might have to make a call to Luke Walton and discuss how much it sucks to be so much worse than your Hall of Fame dad.

CIN-OAK
The Bengals are the Brian Scalabrine of the NFL. You ask yourself what the fuck are they doing playing so well and while you think you know the answer, you don't. Good thing you don't have to worry about that with the Raiders.

PHI-CHI
Jay Cutler was the toast of the town in Chi-town just like Jason "White Chocolate" Williams was in the NBA back in the 90's. But now, Cutler is throwing interceptions like he's Jake Delhomme and Williams is wondering why he's become the white Penny Hardaway.

TEN-HOU
The Chris "Birdman" Andersen game of the week. Should be exciting to watch, just sans the 25 tattoos, white trash hairdo, broken english and baby blue headband.

Matt Barnes' posts stand-out this season for two reasons. One, he somehow intelligently ties in his theme with each and every game of the week. And two, he always knows how to use the 'personal dig.' Whether it be Notre Dame, Tiffin, etc., he shows no fear. I do the same thing with Ohio State and Columbus, so it's a great working trade-off.

2009 NFL ATS Pick 'Em: Week Eleven - Kevin Hunt

By: Luke Florence
This week's theme needs no introduction. It does, however, need a name: U.S. Disabled Heroes. Enjoy. (For the record, this was inspired by Matt Barnes, who recently asked me, "Why do all of my best sports stories involve disabled people??")

Pittsburgh (-9.5) @ Kansas City
The Steelers are Sylvester Stallone. Sure Rocky didn't run up any stairs in Pittsburgh, but Stallone's paralysis of the left side of his face rings true in the Steel City. Big, dumb guys with the inability to speak clearly who can simply hit really hard CAN succeed in America.

Indianapolis (-0.5) @ Baltimore
Peyton Manning is Christopher Reeve. Peyton has shown he can be Superman on the field and leads the league in basically every QB category despite not having an established running game to keep defenses off guard.

San Francisco @ Green Bay (-6.5)
The Packers are FDR. He was in office longer than any other President, much like Brett Favre was under center for more consecutive games than any other quarterback. It also would not surprise me to see Favre in a wheelchair sometime soon. Not that he'd let you see him that way.

Oh yeah, Packers haven't lost at home to the 49ers since 1990.

Buffalo @ Jacksonville (-8.5)
The Jags are Michael Bolton. Pop singer was deaf in one ear, much like the Jags have a pretty good run game, but really no passing game. Their song and dance might be enough to record some hits (and get into the playoffs), but it won't be a special end to the run.

Atlanta @ New York Giants (-6.5)
Eli Manning is Michael J. Fox. You're not sure he's done anything worthwhile for some time, then you always remember "Back to the Future" (or, in Eli's case, a Super Bowl win).

New Orleans (-11.5) @ Tampa Bay
Ballbuster Pick of the Week: Taking the underdog in the 7th game listed. This is how the Ballbuster originated... time to get back to its roots.

Cleveland @ Detroit (-3.5)
This may become an annual tradition... Cleveland vs. equally awful team = Helen Keller Bowl. Despite being blind, deaf and mute, Keller found a way to communicate. By a similarly incredible feat, one of these teams is likely to come out with a win. (Note: I just changed my pick to Cleveland assuming these teams will end in a tie. Not joking.)

Washington @ Dallas (-11.5)
Dallas is Ray Charles.
Sun glasses, dancing and smiles.
Romo is homo.

Seattle @ Minnesota (-10.5)
Brad Childress is Albert Einstein (stay with me here). Einstein was born with a learning disability, yet somehow turned his life around and is known as one of the smartest guys ever. Childress was on his way out before turning his life around (via Favre and AP) and getting his contract extended. I believe both situations will end in a similar way as well, with Childress posing in a goofy manner like Einstein did (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/86/Einstein_tongue.jpg).

Arizona (-8.5) @ St. Louis
Kyle Boller is Thomas Edison. Edison had a learning disability as a kid and had trouble writing when he was older. Yet he found a way to invent the practical light bulb, despite many believing he wasn't so bright. Yeah, it's cheesy, but Kyle Boller... not bright.

New York Jets @ New England (-10.5)
The Pats would be Muhammed Ali. Even though Bill Belichick had a brain fart last week, can anyone even imagine this team being run by anyone other than Belichick and Brady?? When Ali ended his career, a lot of boxing history ended with him.

San Diego (-2.5) @ Denver
Chris Simms is Chris Simms. Just watch him play on Sunday.

Cincinnati (-9.5) @ Oakland
JaMarcus Russell is Jim Abbott. Like Abbott, Russell was born without his right hand and instead throws with his left han... wait, what?? Russell actually has both hands?? And he STILL throws like that??

Philadelphia (-2.5) @ Chicago
Jay Cutler is Paul Newman. The actor-director was found to be color blind while enrolled at Ohio University and looking to become a Navy pilot. Cutler has trouble telling colors as well, considering he's thrown it to the other team more than any other QB this year. Yes, even more than Jake Of The Man.

Tennessee @ Houston (-5.5)
RB Chris Johnson is Stephen Hawking. For all we know, he operates as a machine, not even as a human. Though I have a feeling Stephen Hawking's wheelchair seriously lacks, "gettin' away from the cops speed."

Hunt's been doing this for years and it is e-mails like this which paint a clear picture of why Kevin is a two-time Gus Johnson Champion. Expect the originator of the "Romo Is Homo" haiku to be right up there for the QOTW in week 11.

2009 NFL ATS Pick 'Em: Week Eleven - Jeff Schaffer

By: Luke Florence

Thought I would switch it up a bit with this late week 11 column. Instead of putting it all together in one post, I would make separate entries for each league member who made comments.

The reasoning behind this is two-fold.

One, trying new things can never hurt. It may turn out to be better than what we are currently doing.

And two, I'm lazy, it's Friday, and I want to concentrate on week 12 instead.

Giddy up.
INDIANAPOLIS (-0.5) @ Baltimore
Tough one to call: the Colts caught a lucky break for a comeback win last week, while the Ravens played a horrible team in a joke of a Monday night game. One of these teams won't be prepared for this game, I'm just not sure which one.

BUFFALO @ Jacksonville (-8.5)
Buffalo's receivers said this week they feel more comfortable with Ryan Fitzpatrick under center. I don't know why, but I'll trust them. Also I heard he went to Harvard, is that true?

Atlanta @ NEW YORK GIANTS (-6.5)
My initial gut feeling was to take the Giants, so I am...and it hurts me more than any loss ever could.

Cleveland @ DETROIT (-3.5)
Mike Holmgren says he'd like to interview for the Browns' coaching job. Why not give him a headset this week so he can listen in? If he still wants the job after the game, I say that's enough commitment for a hire.

Washington @ DALLAS (-11.5)
I read that Roy Williams is going back to wearing a visor since this is a noon game. This way he'll have a better view of all of Miles Austin's catches.

SAN DIEGO (-2.5) @ Denver
I never thought that a Kyle Orton injury would cause so much concern in his team's camp. The only people who should be mad about this are the Chargers.

CINCINNATI (-9.5) @ Oakland
I'd love to go with the MAC quarterback in this one, but even Bruce 'the Juice' Gradkowski needs people who can actually catch the ball. The one MAC QB I might give a chance to win with this team? Josh Harris. That guy was sick.

PHILADELPHIA (-2.5) @ Chicago
Question: If Jay Cutler throws a pass in the forest, will anyone be there to pick it off?

Tennessee @ HOUSTON (-5.5)
I don't see either of these teams stopping the other. Has there ever been a game with zero punts?

It's always a better week when Jeff Schaffer makes comments. No question he will have several candidates for the Week 11 Quote Of The Week. What makes Spider's quotes so great are how simple they are. They are not overly complicated, and never long in length. He also has a sense of humor that is comparable to mine, which makes his comments that much better.

Luke Vs. The League - Episode Two - Season One

By: Luke Florence

Brian Boesch represents the League as we go over the Week 12 lines. See if he can even the score, as the League trails it 1-0 after the KOA defeated Luke Polito two weeks ago.

Then, as an added bonus, check out the F'd Up Pick Of The Week, which was done LIVE in part two. We also discuss the F'd Up Tournament and the Cleveland Indians.
Giddy up.

The F'd Up Pick Of The Week

Big thanks to Brian Boesch for taking the time to appear on our podcast. As of right now we do not have any more scheduled appearances, so please let me know a week that will work for you.

My Name Is Jason Fazzone And I Write Special Sections ... Part One

By: Luke Florence

For some reason I completely forgot to post Jason Fazzone's Week Ten Column, so what follows is his forgotten special section. At the end of his post I will make some comments. Enjoy and apologies to Fiz for being two weeks behind on his special sections.

IN THE ZONE - Vol. I - Num. IX

My apologies for not putting out a section this past week – I was enjoying the wonderful city of Denver. For not having a car, we still had a good time, taking in an Avalanche game (more to come on that), taking a tour of Coors Field and being at the Steelers/Broncos Monday night game. And now, onto what I’ve been thinking about lately:

The highlight of Denver (besides the Steelers win): My friend Mike Dubz and I had nothing to do Sunday night, so we figured we’d go to the Colorado Avalanche/Edmonton Oilers game. For $55 apiece, we got club seats that were located behind the net. While we were waiting at a bar near the Pepsi Center for the guy to meet us to give us our tickets, Dubz started talking to a guy from Montreal who was also in Denver for the Steelers/Broncos game. This guy asked Dubz if we were going to the game, and after Dubz said yes, invited both of us into his suite.

Dubz gave him his number, but we figured this guy was just pulling our leg. Not even 10 minutes after getting into our actual seats, this guy called us and invited us over.

As it turns out, this guy and five of his buddies (all from Montreal) rented a 20-person suite for the game. They went to bars and invited random people they met to join them. Hands down, it was the rowdiest suite I’ve ever been in. We were getting drunk off free beer and Grey Goose and ate some free food – fantastic. The Oilers won, 5-3, and we ripped on the Avs fans as they were walking out of the building, which was all in good fun.

So we return to our hotel, and we run into these guys again, and they happened to be staying in the same hotel. It was the six Canadians, me, Dubz and a young couple from New Mexico at one of the tables and it was just a big ripfest. During this time, one of the Canadians lifts his hat, and in the middle of this open area, hands the kid from New Mexico a joint.

After that, and hearing the story in which they spent over $10,000 in airfare just to get to Denver, Dubz and I firmly believe that we partied with Canadian drug dealers. Nothing else explains it.

Places to go in Denver: Coyote Ugly was pretty cool – just ignore the old guys assembled around the bar and drooling over the bartenders. The girls were hot, but this one had the fakest breasts I’ve ever seen in my life. They didn’t even flinch while she danced. Other than that, Katie Mullen’s is a good place to eat and drink, Earls’ waitresses are smoking hot, and The Delectable Egg has great breakfast food (and I never eat breakfast). Now, to non-Denver material:

Dubz is never making another pick for me: I collaborated with him for last week’s picks, since he was on a roll betting games. The result was a 3-10 week. Awesome.

But, believe in miracles: Somehow, some way, I will come back to at least get close to the money, if not in it by the end of the season.

Steelers will win: No way in hell Cincinnati comes into Heinz Field and replicates what it pulled off earlier this season. The Steelers have played at another level the past few weeks, thanks to Troy Polamalu being back.

Jay Cutler: I hope you burn in hell.

NBA Coach of the Year: Apparently, it’s not good to win this award. Avery Johnson, Sam Mitchell and now Byron Scott have all been canned in at least two years after winning the award. Hey, Mike Brown, guess what happens if you don’t win a title and LeBron leaves?

Pink suitcases: I just saw Eric Maynor and Wesley Matthews carrying pink fairytale suitcases into the Q for the Cavaliers/Jazz game. Kinda reminded me of Polito’s “soft hour,” when he would eat fruit cups and listen to NSync, the Backstreet Boys and Savage Garden.

Jillian Reynolds: I miss you on Fox’s pregame show. Please bring you and your large breasts back ASAP.

I hate this: There was something I wanted to put in this column, but I can’t remember it.

USC/Notre Dame: Two things have happened twice in the past three seasons: Navy beating Notre Dame and Stanford beating USC. That gets an “LOL” from me.

Poland football: Poland Seminary plays Cardinal Mooney in the Division III, Region 9 championship Friday night. I can’t wait to see how many fights break out in the stands.

New job: I start my new job Monday; can’t wait to make the hour-long commute to and from Akron while waiting to move out.

Projected AFC playoff teams: Patriots, Steelers, Colts, Chargers (division champs); Bengals and Broncos

Last AFC team out: Texans

Projected NFC playoff teams: Eagles, Vikings, Saints, Cardinals (division champs); Cowboys and Packers

Last NFC team out: Falcons

Super Bowl XLIV: Steelers over Vikings

As always, until next time, go Steelers!

_______________________________________________________________
First things first Fiz ... you DID party with Canadian drug dealers. No question about it.

Second, the Cleveland Browns have better chances of making the playoffs then you do of coming close to winning money in this league. Sorry to burst that bubble. Better to accept it now and start planning for 2010.

Third, the highlight of this column was Polito's soft-hour. Brilliant.

Fourth, the Denver Broncos have no shot of making the playoffs. None.

Lastly, right now the Pittsburgh Steelers are probably the fifth - or sixth - best team in the AFC. Good luck with that Super Bowl prediction.

Overall, a solid column, even if it did paint a weird picture of Fiz getting all googly-eyes over anyone with breasts. Keep 'em coming.

Until next time, "read it, roll it, hole it."

2009 NFL ATS Pick 'Em: Week Ten QOTW

By: Luke Florence

Third post of the day as we kick off Redeem Week in a big way.

The week ten Quotes Of The Week ... where getting personal happens.

Giddy up.

TOP TEN WEEK TEN QUOTES
10) “’BIOS 100 - The Animal Kingdom’ - In the wilderness, pretty sure a Panther would kill a Falcon. But in the NFL kingdom, forget about it. Mike Smith has more fight in him than the Panthers do in the second half of any game.” - Matt Barnes.

9) “It’s a good thing this whole Browns fans boycott thing was announced prior to this game. Otherwise, someone would have seen the empty seats and just figured Ray Lewis murdered everyone.” - Jason Fazzone.

8) “‘SOC 260 - Criminal Justice’ - What's the biggest crime? Ray Lewis getting no jail time for killing a guy? Dante Stallworth getting 30 days for killing a guy while driving drunk? Eric Mangini having his 1-7 team practice too much? Or the NFL for subjecting us to this awful match-up? You be the judge.” - Matt Barnes.

7) “No one on these teams wants to be different than who they are. Obviously it is working for them all pretty well. But just for a second, let's imagine Peyton or Brady as being black. ‘What is things Warren Moon and Randall Cunningham never want to imagine??’” - Kevin Hunt.

6) “It feels weird picking teams from Ohio in professional sports. It usually just doesn’t make sense. It’s like throwing beer bottles after a football game, or getting hit in the eye by a penalty flag or getting more arrests than wins in a season.” - Eric Hug.

5) “’PSY 120 - Intro to Statistics’ - Just think about the numbers Drew Brees is gonna put up on the Rams defense. It might rival Jimmy Clausen's numbers from any Notre Dame game, except his team will actually win.” - Matt Barnes.

4) “No Music City Miracle this time around – unless Trent Edwards and Vince Young can sport quarterback ratings over 50.” - Jason Fazzone.

3) “Aaron Rodgers becomes the new spokesman for Trojan after constantly asking for protection.” - Jeff Normand.

2) “’THAR 113 - Acting Fundamentals’ - If the Bengals are acting like a good team, they're doing one hell of a job. Kind of like how Bart is acting like he's not good at picking against the spread. You sand-baggin son of a bitch.” - Matt Barnes.

1) “Jake Young kept creepily smiling at me and touching my chest at the bars Tuesday night. If that isn't a waving of the white flag by Packer nation, I don't know what is." - Brian Boesch.

Congratulations to Brian Boesch for winning the Week Ten Quote Of The Week. It's the second horse Boesch has running in the Quote Of The Year Derby. See if Boesch can parlay his recent commentating success into a win for the League, as he will be our next participant in the Luke Vs. The League contest tomorrow.

Until next time, "read it, roll it, hole it."
